Prioritize Quality and Relevance

As the editor of a lifestyle magazine, which is such a visual product, the integration of images requires careful consideration. So, whether I receive photos from a photographer or have taken them myself, I prioritize two key factors: quality and relevance. What this means is that they have to be of high enough quality to captivate our readers, as well as make sense within the context of their respective stories.

Given that I’m working with a variety of layouts, I have the opportunity to choose whether I want to publish a piece with one or several photos. Regardless of my end decision, I go into every editorial with a request that it’s 'the more the merrier' when it comes to receiving images. That’s why an example that comes to mind is our recent cover story on a winery, for which I gathered a diverse array of photos to weave into a visual narrative, from the vineyard to the barrel room to the cows on the surrounding landscape.

With any kind of written content, I believe that editors can make a more engaging reading experience when media is incorporated, as long as it’s acting to enhance the text. Our goal is to craft a blend of words and visuals that leaves a lasting impression, so there needs to be a fine balance between the two.

This process should be called instant gratification. When properly used, integrating multimedia content and elements into written articles is very satisfying, like icing on the cake.

In order to successfully integrate multimedia into written content, you must first visualize the content from a different perspective. The first step is to place yourself on the other side of the article. Make sure that your content is so engaging, the reader can actually 'visualize' it. The same way you can read a misspelled paragraph and know exactly what it says, your brain is also programmed to understand the words even though all of the words are misspelled. It's the same way with integrating your multimedia into your written content.

The multimedia is an actual bonus to the reader and is meant to intrigue and engage the person reading the article so much that they can actually visualize what they're reading. The actual integration of multimedia elements is a smooth and beneficial process that involves adding a screenshot of the content or a link to the actual video.

Everything we do is all about color, taste, and touch. It's the same with content, especially multimedia content. A prime example of integrating multimedia is when you're dealing with anything that is related to food. This is a great example where food was used to entice the audience into reading the article and book. This article covered a wide audience that ranged from a 2-Michelin-star chef to award-winning doctors.

Your multimedia components should always be complementary to your written work. If you're asking readers to engage more deeply, then you should make that experience worthwhile for them. Sure, you'll probably need to repeat some basics, but try not to waste the audience's time by being too redundant.

It's also important to remember that, often, photos and videos will be viewed and shared independently of your written text. So, make sure they can *mostly* stand alone outside of their written context, just in case that writing gets overlooked.
